Philip and Major Tom

28 Μαρτίου, 2020

I have been subjected to the violent sarcasm of K1. For falling so low and spending endless hours in front of the TV set. Not a good ending for a known critic of the sport.

Well, circumstances.

We have been watching “The Crown” about the British Royal family. Five stars for quality and wealth of production, some excellent actors as well, and interesting stories too.

The last one we watched, was about the Duke of Edinburgh’s mid-life crisis in relation to his obsession with the 1969 landing on the moon. The story focused too much on the de-heroization of the three astronauts who took part in a private meeting with Philip, and to his immense disappointment, were devolved into the human beings they were. Even if they took part in one of humanity’s greatest moments.

If not the greatest.

Philip had his issues and surely mid – life crisis considerations is not uncommon to people of his and my age… but, I think the greatest discomfort I felt was not the lack of comparable achievements for any human for many decades.

It was the pit we are in now. Back in 1969 all the people with a TV set were looking up, for two of their kind who walked on the closest rock to this one. Up there, in the sky.

Now, not only we have far less ambitions and priorities, but what we have to do for our dear lives is to hide into our pit and hope we will be sane long enough until all this is over.

I got out of the house and looked up there in the cold night. I thought about Major Tom. Stepping through the door and cutting his circuit dead.

“Am I sitting in a tin can

Far above the world

Planet Earth is blue

And there’s nothing I can do”.

His wife knew. And he did it. Sad, but better than hiding in a pit, fighting a virus.
