On Boris

7 Απριλίου, 2020

We spent the larger part of the last two years monitoring the Brexit saga. Ineffective Theresa was trying to get the best part of two words, we were surprised each time we faced a “first” in the Commons,  inside her party, inside the clueless opposition of the Labour party,  inside the other parties, Scotland kept sending warnings about following its own course, Northern Ireland was a hot issue, we saw a speaker of parliament effectively utilizing powers that he was not supposed to have.

The Brexit date kept moving forward and the fear of a no deal kept creeping in the minds of sane people who understood and accepted what was going on, but were very keen to avoid the worst-case scenario.

And then Boris came, and the uncertainty immediately evaporated. He got a comfortable majority and things became less unclear.

And then suddenly all this was forgotten. Covid-19 hit our lives in all imaginable ways. Surely another unbelievable series of “firsts”. And this time it was the whole world involved, not just the UK and the EU.

I was very tired last night when reading the latest news. A denial caught my eye: a Russian source talked about Boris Johnson moving form a normal hospital bed to an intensive care unit.

The “news” was basically deemed fake at that early stage. And I thought, oh those Russians! They try to exploit every single happening in our side of the system, to – precisely – undermine this system and register bigger or smaller victories.

Then I went to bed. I got up after midnight, I am having uneasy sleeps these days, and checked my mobile phone to see what time it was.

It was about 01.30 AM. But that was not all. All the buzzes were about Boris. He was in fact moved to the intensive care unit of St Thomas’ Hospital.

So those Russians knew first! (Or did they?)

And they were right.

Scary, however you look at it.
