Looking for a new roote

17 Οκτωβρίου, 2021

Last Sunday’s competitive run was judged as a complete disaster by my manly instincts. It was not that I came second to last but it was the feeling of complete exhaustion that overwhelmed me after the finishing line. That, was a very bad omen. A friend suggested to take me to a first aid hospital. That was the greatest humiliation!

Enter the new week and I found myself overwhelmed in a more frightening feeling. This “Cause London is drowning and I live by the river…” (*) feeling. A lot of things didn’t go by the book.

Come Sunday and it was a cooler than of late morning, slightly overcast was a bonus, and I said, OK, I am going to run.

I headed towards the centre of the city, as I have done hundreds of times. But today I thought it was a good time to check on the new arrangements that are meant to extend the walking and bicycle lane to the very centre of the city, at Eleftherias Square.

It is a very ambitious and positive project, that will face a huge backlash when the drivers realize that some parts of the roads have been permanently taken away form them. Now it is still work in progress and therefore they may not actually get it.

On the other hand, I do not expect many volunteer walkers or cyclists to actually start using the new arrangements en masse, so the end result will be more congestion to the limited roads.

Well, good luck!

To be honest I got kind of sentimental seeing concrete slabs in the middle of the path, indicating exclusive use by cyclists. Too much of a “normal” state on a cooler than of late Sunday morning.

The city centre was bursting with life on a cooler than of late Sunday morning. Many colourful house maids and other assistants from far away countries were celebrating something and a feel good factor was prevailing all around the ancient walls.

I was trying to manoeuvre my body through all these people and I felt that I lost my right ear bud. I stopped and started looking in desperation to find it. I needed to finish listening to New Model Army in stereo.

“Ela” came a voice from my back. One of the colourful ladies found the gadget and she was more than happy to give it back to me. Her large smile was barely hidden behind her mask.

Ok, little things, but good things.

I headed back home aiming to check another part of the new arrangements for cyclists and walkers. Sure, they are aiming big. But why do they have to exhibit our perpetual tendency for amateurism and lack of professionalism? Even in these “nice” projects?

Honestly, what does “roote” mean?

…..

I run about 9K. One less than last Sunday, but in exactly the same time. I was much happier.
